Breeding

At Iowa Pointing Labs, we have spent hundreds of hours prospecting for pointing Labrador retrievers and travelling across the country searching out and watching them perform. From hunting in South Dakota with a professional trainer to attending hunt tests, field trials, NAHRA events, and running dogs in the APLA. Hunting pheasants and quail the last 30 plus years behind Labrador retrievers. We have done it all to ensure we provide our customers with only the finest Labradors for the field and especially the home. In addition we have checked the health of all the breeding labradors and require they're certified by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) certified, Canine Eye Registration Certification and non effected EIC. The goal is to minimize the incidence of genetically caused problems through the screening of the breeding stock.

We have hired and trained with several professional trainers throughout the country, which has provided the opportunity to see hundreds of retrievers perform. In 2010, we had four different trainers working for Iowa Pointing Labs throughout the country. When you add the successes and failures with the time spent, we’re very confident in the puppies that Iowa Pointing Labs produces.

We focus on six traits in our dogs:

  1. Companionship with strong desire to please
  2. STRONG desire to hunt. Nothing less then quartering systematically and aggressively hunting a field
  3. Boldness-the desire is so great he demonstates a large amount of boldness like hitting the water hard
  4. Trainability & Intelligence-they will be quick to learn, loves to work while training and hunting birds
  5. Marking-they will demonstrate a good focus
  6. Natural Pointing-holding point as soon as the location of the bird is found with strong scenting ability

WE HAVE NO BREEDING LABRADORS THAT DON"T HAVE A GREAT DESIRE TO HUNT!

Our first goal is to produce the best companion for a pet in the home as well as a phenomenal hunting and retreiving dog. Our Labradors have an excellent pedigree with strong traits emphasizing intelligence, pointing, retrieving, and being a great companion. The highest strung lab we have for stud is MH GMPR "Cal" and he lives in our home. We strongly recommend keeping  puppies in the home. These puppies will be able to turn on the drive for hunting and turn it off when in the home. The sire of all our litters will be at least a GMPR or FC, which is very important. If you want a pointing lab and are willing to spend the extra money, make sure that your sire has been tested to hunt and achieve those titles. If our breeding females don’t demonstrate these traits we give them away to great homes as only pets without breeding rights. We have done the homework for you. If you have any questions about certain bloodlines or litters, please give us a call. We also can provide references of our satisfied customers.
